Millions of Australians are on alert as tropical low Queensland weather threatens the Far North Coast. The system could dump up to 200mm of rain, with winds reaching 65 km/h. Coastal towns are at risk of flash flooding as the system moves closer to Queensland’s coastline.

The tropical low (12U) formed in the Coral Sea and is expected to move towards the northeast coast over the next few days. The Bureau of Meteorology issued a severe weather alert, warning that the system could strengthen into a tropical cyclone, with the chance increasing from 25% to 35% by Friday.

Flash Flooding and Winds Forecast with Tropical Low Queensland Weather

The Bureau of Meteorology predicts heavy rainfall and thunderstorms to spread throughout the region starting Friday. Rainfall totals of 100-150mm are likely, with isolated areas seeing up to 200mm. East to southeasterly winds of 55-65 km/h are also expected, with gusts possibly reaching 90 km/h. The warning covers areas from north of Hope Vale to Hamilton Island in the Whitsundays.

Rainfall Already Impacting Queensland: The Tropical Low’s Effect

Parts of Queensland have already experienced significant rainfall. Between Cairns and Townsville, some regions recorded over 1,000mm in the past week. The Bureau has raised concerns about further heavy rainfall, with Cowley Beach in the Cassowary Coast recording an impressive 1,284mm.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has announced a $38 million disaster relief package for the affected areas, including support for primary producers and infrastructure repairs.
