Australian Federal Police (AFP) have not explained the seemingly doctored mugshot of illicit tobacco kingpin Kazem Hamad. Iraqi authorities supplied the image, but inconsistencies have raised suspicions.
The photo showed Hamad in front of a height-indicating board, typical in police processing areas. However, the numbers on the board did not align, and the lighting in the image appeared inconsistent. These issues have led many to question the authenticity of the photo.
When contacted by NewsWire, the AFP declined to comment beyond confirming the image came from Iraqi authorities. The AFP released the image on Tuesday night without offering further details.
Tobacco Kingpin Mugshot: Did Authorities Alter It?
Following the release of the controversial image, the AFP shared another photo of Hamad with a media release. The AFP claimed the new image related to their efforts to exploit a power vacuum within Hamad’s Australian tobacco syndicate. Despite this, they have not confirmed if the mugshot had been altered.
Hamad, 41, was arrested in Iraq in January as part of a drug investigation. He faces possible death penalty charges.
Tobacco Kingpin’s Role in Australia’s Illicit Tobacco Syndicate
Hamad has been a key figure in Melbourne’s illicit tobacco trade, and the AFP considers him a national security threat. His syndicate is suspected of operating across six Australian states and territories. Hamad lived in Australia for many years, but he never obtained citizenship. After serving eight years in prison, he was deported in 2023.
The AFP remains focused on dismantling Hamad’s syndicate, which continues to pose a significant threat to Australian law enforcement.
